Let Me Introduce Myself

My name is Maria Gordils and
I’m running to be the next
Democratic Alderwoman for the 33rd Ward.

I was born and raised on the north side of Chicago and I’m of Puerto Rican descent. Both of my parents worked in a number of factories before they were married. Once married, they had five children and my mom became a housewife. She is a self-taught chef.

My father was also a life long Democrat. He became involved in politics and as children, I remember that we would help him distribute political materials. I would say that it was my dad who inspired me to be politically active.

My parents also instilled in me the love of Chicago sports teams – particularly the Chicago Cubs.

For the past 42 years, I have been married to Jose, a wonderful husband and father. We have two amazing young adults: Julian and Anastasia. And we also have our lovely dog, Buddy. We are like you – a hard working middle class family. I’m known to be a down-to-earth, humble person but a strong-willed woman who stands up for what is right and just.

I’m a proud product of Chicago Public Schools for both elementary and high school. I graduated from Lake View High School and continued my education at Northeastern Illinois University where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

Upon graduation, I was hired by the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, where I was a public servant for 40 years. Early on I assisted in successfully unionizing the office support staff. From 1990 to 2026, I remained employed with the office as a Sentencing Advocate (recently changed to Mitigation Specialist). Throughout my professional career, I have specialized in advocating for youths and adults in their time of need. I have dealt with many different community youth programs and other organizations. After nearly a thousand cases, my hope is, through my time as a public servant, that I have positively impacted their lives, the lives of their families and their communities. I truly believe that my purpose in life is to help others. This year, I retired after 40 years of service.

Why Am I Running for Alderwoman of the 33rd Ward?

I have lived in the 33rd Ward for over 40 years and I care about my community.
I was asked by members of the community to run and advocate for the community.
I am not a career politician but I felt I had to get involved to make a difference.
To provide better city services for the entire ward which our community deserves.
Use taxpayers dollars more effectively within the ward.
To address property tax reform and oppose increasing property taxes.
Focus on local issues within the community.
Provide accessibility and transparency via open community forums.
To unify our communities by finding common ground.
Work with law enforcement and district council to provide safe neighborhoods.
Find ways to help support our teachers so that our children thrive.
